Pets of Hastings : Oscar! Illustrator Hannah Wilken aka Petal & Post Illustration.

Oscar! Another painting for my Pets of Hastings project - a series of paintings I'm creating inspired by Hastings (where I live) and the pets that live in it. This gent belongs to Hannah Wilken, an illustrator based in the heart of St Leonards-on-sea. Hannah got in contact after I put out an open call to creatives in the area for this personal project but I've been familiar with her work for quite a while now through Instagram!

I gather from her email that Oscar - a Norweigen forest cat - is quite the character!

'He’s a rescue from the local animal sanctuary Barby Keel. We adopted him about 8 years ago now, but it’s only been in the last 2 years he’s really settled (less busy household now there’s only 2 of us) and begun to show his personality. He’s incredibly attention seeking and ditsy. He has tried on many occasion to follow me to work, walking behind me and when I turn to look at him, he stops as if he’s not following me. To get away from him you have to run really fast ( so I look nuts) He also once tried to get on the bus with me, as in, he got on it. The bus driver asked if he was my cat as I hadn’t noticed he’d gotten on! We love each other dearly, he greets me every evening after work at the front door or end of our pathway. He sleeps on me (like on my head) and weirdly licks my finger tips before I go to sleep. He’s quite a big cat, probably the size of a small dog. He’s not a lap cat and I think that comes from his previous owner, we’ve learnt to show affection in other ways like meeting me'.

Hannah's work is vibrant and colourful. With floral's and fruit making a regular appearance in her paintings and prints so this absolutely had to inform the background for this painting. I took inspiration from her lemon pattern notebooks, combining the fruit with some Cosmos flowers, a plant that grows like a weed here in Hastings.  If you want to see more of Hannah's work visit her Instagram here, or have a look at her products available to buy in her Etsy shop! I think this houseplant print is particularly lovely....
